eCommerce SEO works like regular SEO, the key is to understand user intent. User intent is simply what a user expects to find when they search for a specific term in a search engine. There are 4 different types of user search intent. Before we look at search intent lets look at a marketing funnel:
In the marketing funnel there are 3 stages in a users buying journey. Awareness, Consideration and Conversion. Interestingly these stages all correlate to the 4 different types of user intent.
A user with informational search intent is typically looking for an answer to a question. They are looking for information. They could also be looking for information about a restaurant in their area or the time of a foot ball game.
Navigational Search Intent is when a user is looking for something very specific. Usually they already know what they are looking for. For example if a user is wanting to do some shopping on Amazon, they’ll search “Amazon”. This is different from a informational search intent such as “best ecommerce stores for washing machines”.
Transactional Search Intent is when the user is wanting to perform a transaction. For example if you sell soccer balls a transactional search would be something like “Soccer balls for sale”.
Commercial intent is when a user has the intent to perform a transaction (transactional intent), but they need some more convincing. In our marketing funnel they may be in the “consideration” phase.
